Hello Everyone! Thank you so much for visiting the Richland Elementary Guidance Page. My name is Amy Molitor and I have been an elementary counselor since 2006. I received my undergraduate degree in Sociology from Westminster College and my Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology from Chatham University. Before coming to Richland, I was previously employed as an itinerant elementary counselor with the Butler Area School District for two years. I currently live in the district with my husband, my daughter, and my son. I love living in the area and working at Richland is truly my dream job. I often am faced with the question “What does an elementary counselor do anyway?” I hope that this webpage provides some insight into my job and the reasons why I feel counselors are an important resource to have in elementary school. My door is always open, so if you have any questions, concerns, or joys to share with me, please don't hesitate to stop by! I look forward to working with your children and getting to know you in the years to come.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling is available to ALL students in need, at the request of the student, parent, or staff member. While students may see me at any time for brief discussions, parental permission is required prior to a series of planned sessions. Students are able to express concerns in a safe environment, where problem solving can then take place.
Small Group Counseling
The purpose of a small group is to enhance student learning by helping students improve their perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. A small group provides a safe setting where children increase their: 1) self-awareness, 2) cooperation and communication skills, and 3) ability to have fun with peers. In a small group, children have the ability to learn from each other. Ultimately, the goal group counseling is to PREVENT problems in the future by teaching children appropriate skills.
Some of the groups I will be facilitating this year include social skills, friendship, and emotional regulation. New groups will be forming all year. Please let me know if you feel your child may benefit from participating.
Classroom School Counseling Lessons
I will be teaching lessons in the classroom throughout the year when there is a specific need and the teacher requests my services. My goal is to address developmental issues common to elementary students. My lesson plans are based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs. Topics will include respecting others, career readiness, cyber safety, and emotional regulation. Letters will be sent home after I facilitate a lesson in classroom, in hopes that the topic will lead to further discussion at home.
